The market square is surrounded by houses with slate-covered façades. The Gothic Kaiserworth and town hall are the most impressive buildings. In the centre of the square stands a fountain with two large bronze basins, surmounted by a crowned imperial eagle. Be sure to look for the chiming clock on the house opposite the town hall, which presents four scenes a day that depict the history of mining in the Harz from the Middle Ages to the present day.
