The green is one of Glasgow's major historical sites. Common land, ground for fairs and shows, washhouse and gallows, it has borne witness to all aspects of the city's history. Its vast, immaculate lawns, shaded by a few copses of trees, are very popular in summer. Every August, the World Pipe Championship takes place on the green.
