Built at the end of the 1C in green sandstone on the side of a hill, this amphitheatre measures 28m in height (nowadays just 13m) and could seat 14 000 spectators who came here to witness the execution of condemned prisoners and the display and slaughter of big cats in the morning, followed by gladiator combats in the afternoon. The white reinforced concrete structure surrounding the original foundations fulfils a triple objective: to prevent further deterioration of the remains, to highlight the original proportions of the building, and to enable it to perform its former function.
