A group of 25 Sinagua cliff dwellings dating from the 12C are built into the limestone walls of the narrow, vertiginous Walnut Creek canyon, hidden by vegetation. Island Trail (1.5km) requires a degree of fitness, but visitors who are able to descend the 240 steps are rewarded with the chance to see some dwellings clinging to the rocks. The villages can be viewed from afar by those walking the Rim Trail (20min there and back), which follows the cliff edge.
