The statue of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre (Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre) draws hundreds of worshippers each Sunday who come from Santiago to attend Mass in the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. Declared patron saint of Cuba on 10 May 1916, she has been the object of boundless veneration ever since. The sanctuary, built to accommodate the idol, is full of ex-voto offerings left by believers.
