Perched on a rocky spur, the fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999) is made up of an assortment of constructions from different periods. The 12C porch leads into the outer courtyard, which is framed by half-timbered 15C and 16C buildings. The palace is renowned for its Romanesque arcading dating from the early 13C. The redoubt and south tower command a splendid view. Inside Wartburg Museum illustrates the history of the site and exhibits a few works by Cranach the Elder.
