Founded in the 12C, this major spiritual site enjoyed considerable importance up until the Revolution. Significantly altered, the abbey is only partly inaccessible, as it is home to one of France's most heavily guarded prisons. Despite its somewhat turbulent history, Clairvaux is gradually rising from its ashes. The lay brothers' building, refectory and the "chicken coops" of the old prison are now open to the public.
