Perched on top of Roule hill (alt. 112m/367ft), the fort of the same name features underground fortifications and the Museum of the Liberation. Both a place of remembrance and a historic centre, this museum charts the dark years of France between 1940-1944, passing from shadow (exodus, occupation, propaganda) to light (Allied landing, Liberation, reconstruction of the port). Splendid view over Cherbourg, the harbours, arsenal and the huge stretch of water (1,500ha/3,706 acres).
