Since 1965, the 11.6km/7mi-long Mont Blanc Tunnel has provided an all-weather passage between Chamonix (France) and Courmayeur (Italy). A fire in 1999 with many casualties highlighted the issue of road traffic in the Alps and the need to find alternative means of transport. A railway line between Lyons and Turin is due to open in 2028-2029.
