In this museum, a large variety of photos and objects recall the harsh living conditions endured by the inhabitants of Ameland up until the 20C. Crops and fishing were not always enough for them to survive. They also had to poach and loot from shipwrecks. Wreck looting was outlawed in 1529 but was common practice right up until the end of the 18C, and made some people very rich.
