The mining of slate quarries began in the 19C. After a ride on the funicular down to 30m below sea level, visitors get an insight into the miners' harsh working conditions. You can also go up the mine's man-made mountain in a 4 x 4 (90% of the slate extracted was unusable): the landscapes are lunar.
