The working-class character of the Friedrichshain district, crossed by Karl-Marx-Allee, is recalled by the area's industrial wasteland and low-income housing. Driven out of the Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts by increases in rent, many of Berlin's young, creative artists have moved into this area in the past few years. Of particular interest are the Strausberger Platz and Volkspark Friedrichshain, while the East Side Gallery (remains of the Berlin Wall) should not be missed.
