Dating from the Meiji period (1879), this venerable institution has retained its magnificent wooden architecture that transports visitors back to another era. The interior is impossibly quaint and bathed in a soft half-light. Here, visitors are buried up to their necks in vats of black and burning sand before rinsing off and taking a dip in the hot (extremely hot!) bath of iron-rich water.
