Kintetsu cable car leads to the summit of Mount Tsurumi at 1,375m/4,511ft above sea level (expect to lose 10°C at the top). The vintage cars have been operating since 1962 and make the 1.8km/1.1mi-climb in about 10min. The red torii (gate) guarding the entrance marks the mountain as a place of dwelling of Fukurokuju, god of longevity. A viewing platform offers a stunning view over Beppu bay where you'll be able to spot the steam from the spa resort and even a few ferries, on a clear day.
