Set in the south transept of St-Etienne Church, this famous statue by Ligier Richier depicts the Prince of Orange, René de Chalon, who was killed during the siege of St-Dizier in 1544. The powerful work was commissioned by his wife, who asked the sculptor to imagine her husband three years after his death, i.e. as a decomposing skeleton. The statue, holding its heart at arm's length, reveals an amazing understanding of anatomy at a time when autopsies were not authorised by the church.
