This was the idea of Gilles de Trèves, the dean of Saint-Maxe's collegiate church when he founded this college with his own money: he wanted to prevent the young nobles of Bar from leaving to study in universities suspected of lending an indulgent ear to the spirit of Reform. In the courtyard are fine stone balustrades, undoubtedly of Flemish origin.
