This 19C district is in fact an island, linked to the city by 16 bridges. Its name, "the Pipe", is thought to come from the long narrow roads (filled-in canals) that used to criss-cross the area. Its busy streets are lined with cafés, restaurants and shops, making this pleasant district which is popular with artists, students and inhabitants from all around the world, the perfect place for a stroll.
