This lively, unevenly shaped square is lined with "brown cafés", the Begijnhof, the Singel and a church, the Oude Lutherse Kerk. A statue, Het Lieverdje (1960), representing a boy with a mischievous smile, was a rallying point for the Provos movement in the 1960s. This movement was perpetuated in the 1970s by squatters, as witnessed by the multi-coloured façade of the Vrankrijk squat at n° 216 on Spuistraat.
