The initial castle, built here on the foundations of a fort from 1286 then destroyed by the French army in 1673, was replaced over the years 1674-1680 by this brick building surrounded by a double moat. Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, lived here from 1918 to 1920, and it was here that he signed his abdication before settling in Doorn.
