This elegant Federal-era estate reflects the refinement of its original owners, Lawrence Lewis and Nelly Custis Lewis. Relatives of George Washington, the couple brought many of the furnishings and memorabilia from Washington's property to their home. In 1846 Woodlawn was purchased by a group of Quaker businessmen, who divided it into separate farms. In 1949 the house was turned into a museum, and today is the property of the National Trust.
