The huge expanse of water (536km²/330mi²), the largest lake in Germany and third largest of Europe, is almost worthy of the title of Swabian Sea. Its mild climate has encouraged the development of vineyards and fruit orchards along its shores and Mainau Island is positively tropical in terms of vegetation. In fact, the Germans consider Lake Constance to be the German "Riviera". It is ideal for swimming, cruises, walks along its romantic shores and excursions to discover its jewels (Meersburg Castle and Birnau church) among others.
