It took nearly 60 years (1784-1841) to build the Nivernais Canal, originally used to float timber. With 116 locks along its 174km course from St-Léger-des-Vignes to Auxerre, its outdated charm is a delight to behold. Allow at least two days to explore the canal, its technical side and its natural environment. The Corbigny-Châtillon-en-Bazois section is perhaps the most attractive and a chance to visit the Échelle de Sardy, a section of the waterway with 16 locks, but Clamecy, further north, is also worth a visit.
