A real technical feat, the salt cathedral of Zipaquirá was carved out of the walls of a disused salt mine. The building that visitors can see nowadays is a replica (1995) of the original cathedral, which was dug out in 1954, because its tunnels were in danger of collapsing. A series of 14 small chapels mark the Stations of the Cross. As you exit the mine, the small Museo de la Salmuera (Brine Museum) charts the history of salt mines in the region.
