In 1576, Doge Alvise Mocenigo I promised that he would build a church dedicated to the Redeemer, should the city survive the plague. Palladio (1508-80) was commissioned to build the church, which boasts a Classical façade and an interior especially designed to accommodate long processions. Flooded with light and flanked with side chapels, the single-nave church is home to a remarkable cycle of paintings depicting the human suffering of Christ. On the third Sunday in July, the Festival of the Redeemer, including a firework display (foghi), takes place here.
