A must-see museum, whose abundance of treasures (110,000 exhibits), showcased in no less than five main buildings, is equalled only by its quality. If you are pressed for time, we recommend concentrating on the Japanese Gallery (Hon-kan) and the Gallery of Horyu-ji Treasures, with its many Buddhist splendours. The examples of calligraphy, painted scrolls, sculptures, ink drawings, etc. illustrate Japan's artistic development from the Jomon era (10 000 BC) to the Second World War.
