According to legend, King Naresuan addressed his troops from inside the head of the giant Buddha of Wat Si Chum, making it seem as though the Enlightened One was speaking to them! He apparently climbed up via a secret staircase, which was intended to symbolise the ascent to Nirvana (or Enlightenment) and which is now closed off. A seated Buddha can be seen in the mondop.
