Hardangerfjord, easily accessible from Bergen, heads far inland toward the northeast, covering a distance of 179km and dividing into several branches. Near the coast the fjord is wide and open, and on its gently sloping banks you can see orchards, prairies and picturesque villages; then, as it moves into the stark mountainous regions, it narrows and becomes wilder.
