Le Barachois, a vast green seafront esplanade (renamed Place Sarda Garriga) is a good place in which to start exploring Saint-Denis. Although the cannons pointing out to sea provide an insight into the town's military past, nowadays this is a pleasant meeting place for locals and tourists alike. A stroll here is particularly pleasant on Sunday afternoons when traffic is prohibited. Concerts are also organised in front of the café of the same name.
