The same Empire-style red locomotive has been ferrying passengers up to the 1,225m/4,000ft-high resort since 1893. The hotel atop the Schafberg summit (1,783m/5,900ft) is only a 5-10min walk from the terminus and offers a spectacular view of the north face and embraces seven lakes sprinkled in magnificent mountainous scenery. Among the most eye-catching are the Attersee, the Mondsee, StWolfgang Lake and the Dachstein glacier.
