Roaring down the slopes of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, the Skógá River finishes with a flourish of twenty cascades, the very last of which, Skógafoss, falls from a 61m cliff, painted green by the vegetation. In 5-10mins, you can climb up onto the crest via quite a steep staircase to look down on the waterfall and contemplate in the distance the immense beach of black sand (Skógasandur) that hems in the ocean. Sportier visitors may wish to continue along Skógárgil gorge and onto further waterfalls.
