If you have seen Ta Prohm, Preah Khan may seem familiar. Both were built in the late 12C by the same king, Jayavarman VII. As Ta Prohm was built to honour the king's father, Preah Khan was erected in tribute to his mother. While the vast monastic complex also served as the king's home during the construction of his famed capital of Angkor Thom, its main vocation was as a centre of learning and education. At its height, the temple was thought to have been home to over 10,000 monks, teachers, disciples and servants.
