Built to defend St. Augustine since the early 18C, the Castillo repelled every enemy attack. Today it ranks among the best-preserved examples of Spanish Colonial fortifications in the New World. A staircase leads up to the gundeck (original cannon) which provides a splendid 360° panorama of the surroundings, a view that was clearly appreciated by those assigned to stand guard over the fort and keep track of enemy movements.
