The El Golfo depression, with its sheer faces, lies on the west coast of the island and is probably the bottom of an ancient crater. The rim is covered with laurels and giant heather while the flat bottom is cultivated. There is an excellent view from the Mirador de la Peña, built by César Manrique at 700m above sea level. The famous rocks of Salmor are further north. Closer to hand, the Fuga de Gorreta, is still home to a species of primeval lizard.
