Piazza della Bocca della Verità is named after The Mouth of Truth, an imposing marble medallion depicting a marine deity preserved in the porch of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which according to legend would bite off the hand of any person with dishonesty upon their conscience. Note the 12C bell tower, one of the most elegant in Rome. Inside, there is a fine Cosmatesque pavement and marble fittings.
