Cardinal Marco Barbo, appointed Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St John by his uncle Pope Paul II (1464-71), had this house rebuilt for the Knights of Rhodes in the 15C over the ruins of a former monastery, which, in turn, had been erected amid the ruins of the Imperial Fora.
