Louis Charles Antoine Desaix (1768-1800) is considered a true local by the people of Riom as he was born near here at Ayat. This fountain commemorates this brave general who distinguished himself by his humanity while Governor of Upper Egypt (where he was known as the "Just Sultan") and who lost his life in the victory at the Battle of Marengo.
