On Paleokastro hill, the citadel forms a stone crown with a 1 300m diameter. It commands the whole town, and the splendid panoramic view takes in the sea and mountains. Built between 1573 and 1580, its served as a refuge to inhabitants during the siege of 1646, from which the Turks emerged as victors. Its surrounding wall, reinforced by four bastions, housed public buildings, most of which have been destroyed.
