The Baroque façade of Catedral São Pedro dos Clérigos (18C) is one of the most beautiful in the city. It presents a monumental stone portal flanked by double columns, with heavy sculpted jacaranda doors. Its two tall bell towers accentuate the verticality of its composition. In 1858, part of the talhas douradas inside was replaced by neo-Classical decoration. Nonetheless, the Rococo sculptures embellishing the high altar and pulpits, as well as the painted ceiling, have been preserved.
