Overlooking the majestic river, this vantage point offers breathtaking views of the Lower Town and the St. Lawrence River. Built along the lines of Parisian boulevards with similar street furniture, it was part of a beautification campaign launched by Lord Dufferin, in an effort to provide a view of the river at a time when the Lower Town was swamped by commercial buildings and warehouses. It rapidly became a very popular meeting place.
