The Asclepion was a temple where pilgrims came to be treated and healed of their ailments. Philosophers, artists, priests and doctors all officiated here, offering a full range of treatments for the benefit of both the body and spirit as part of a rarely matched holistic approach. This all took place to a stunning backdrop which reached its zenith in the 2C and whose remains bear witness to this period of glory: the Via Tecta, paved with marble and lined by Ionic porticoes, the Temple of Telesphoros, and the theatre, masked by a curtain of columns and accessible via an underground corridor.
