Jewel of the Beira Alta and the country's highest mountain range, Serra da Estrela forms a 60km-long and 30km-wide barrier, peaking at 1 993m with Torre. Its summits jagged with rocky blocks and its wooded slopes are part of a nature park. Clear skies, glistening lakes, magnificent panoramic views: little wonder the region, formerly cut off, now attracts skiers in winter (in Penhas da Saúde), campers and walkers in summer.
