Auyuittuq National Park on the south-eastern edge of Baffin Island, for the most part inaccessible, is a stark landscape of perpetual ice, jagged 2 000m/6 560ft-high peaks and glacier-scarred valleys that become deep sounds flanked by cliffs. Auyuittuq means "land that never melts" in Inuktitut and over one quarter of its 21 470 km2/8 290sq mi is covered by the Penny Ice Cap. Since its creation in 1972, the park has drawn experienced climbers from all over the world to its challenging peaks, especially Mount Thor and Mount Asgard.
