This museum recounts the story of Afrikaans. Derived from the Dutch spoken by the first settlers and their descendants, Afrikaans was the common language used and enriched by the different people living on this land. Only English-speakers and Boer aristocrats looked down on this Creole. In the early 20C Afrikaans paradoxically became a symbol of Afrikaner identity, thus of the oppressor, and one of the country's two official languages. Since the end of apartheid, Afrikaans has become popular again and is sometimes used as an alternative to English, associated with globalisation.
