Ramiro I built a summer residence on the south slope of Monte Naranco in the 9C, which was then converted into a church, the Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco. A World Heritage Site, the church is a harmonious quadrangular building on two floors. The ground floor is home to a vaulted, crypt-like structure with two small anterooms. On the first floor, the barrel-vaulted reception room opens onto two loggias. The harmonious and intricate decoration has managed to adapt itself to architectural requirements over the years.
