This enormous basilica was built by P.J.H. Cuypers in 1867-1880 on the model of St Peter's in Rome, with much reduced dimensions. Nevertheless the dome is 68 m high. The façade (1892) is a reproduction of that of St John of Latran in Rome. The interior was decorated by an Anvers sculptor.
