Established in 1945 to preserve the last large stand of virgin hardwood between the Rockies and the Adirondacks, this lovely park includes 60,000 acres of deep wilderness and 100mi of rugged hiking and skiing trails. The "Porkies" lie astride a 500ft-deep escarpment that parallels the lakeshore. From the beach, the gentle slopes resemble the hunched backs of porcupines covered in a dense, bristly forest. Stunning scenery abounds from such viewpoints as Escarpment Lookouta and the Summit Peak Observation Tower.
