Inspired by the Château d'Asnières near Paris, architect Horace Trumbauer designed this dignified country estate (1901) for the "king of coal" Edward J. Berwind. The grandiose interior was the setting for an inauguration ball which was the highlight of the season. Numerous exotic plants were ordered to decorate the property for the occasion and monkeys were released to wander freely through the grounds.
