Tokugawa Art Museum houses the family treasures of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa shoguns, mainly those bequeathed by Tokugawa Ieyasu and his son Yoshinao. The collections comprise more than 10 000 pieces and are displayed in rotation: samurai armour, lacquerware, instruments for the tea ceremony, precious screens, costumes and masks from Noh theatre. But the museum's proudest possessions are the 12C painted scrolls (emaki) illustrating The Tales of the Genji, a masterpiece of Japanese literature. (The fragile originals are only on display for one week a year.)
