Lies along the trout-rich Eel River and contains one of the world's finest reserves of coast redwoods. The first redwood park on the North Coast, it was established in 1921 by the Save-the-Redwoods League. Few experiences can equal the feeling of driving through the silent, breathtaking groves that line the Avenue of the Giants, the scenic 32mi parkway running parallel to US-101 between Phillipsville and Pepperwood (entrance off US-101, 6mi north of Garberville; tour brochure free from roadside box at south end of drive or from Humboldt Redwoods State Park visitor center). Along the way, numerous parking areas afford nature-lovers the opportunity to explore ancient forests.Another park highlight is the Founder's Grove (3mi north of Weott), where a self-guided nature trail (20min) begins at the Founder's Tree, once considered the world's tallest (364ft before the top 17ft broke off). The Rockefeller Forest (turn left on Mattole Rd., 2.5mi north of Weott), comprising 10,000 acres, represents the world's largest remaining virgin redwood forest. A two-lane road bisects the Bull Creek watershed, where two parking areas and numerous hiking trails offer access to the sublime depths of these venerable groves, which comprise the largest biomass of any forest in the world.
