This elegant three-storey Elizabethan house is thought to have been built between 1597 and 1601. It was modified in the 18C, redecorated in the early 20C and eventually bought by the National Trust. On the first floor, visitors can see the Crimson Bedroom with its sumptuous oak four-poster bed carved with the coat of arms of James I; on the second floor is the Long Gallery (52m), which displays 90 portraits loaned by the National Portrait Gallery. The formal gardens offset the architecture of the house.
